Even my short experience with war did something for me that no business or profession could have done.  It somehow made me willing to work indefinitely in order to reach a given goal; willing too, to forego the little pleasures and relaxations that had once seemed so important.  By comparison with the hated labors of those endless marches through the swamps of Canada, any work seemed pleasant, any hours no matter how long seemed short.
